An angry poem

January 15, 2014 | 8 Comments

Dear Bootstrap Bastards,

It starts with seething anger
And spittle on my lips
I hold it in my clammy hands
That tightly close in fists
My claws are out
My eyes are wide
I do not know
Where you can hide

On any day, you’d find me calm
I’d offer ground to meet upon
And point out all the ways we share
The times we nod, the common care
I’d reach quite far to find a case
An instance we could boldly face
Together- chat, communicate
Seek our sameness, combat hate

But on this night when pain’s next door
My jaw is set, fire in my core
I cannot offer sweetness now
As poverty drives a wrecking plow
Straight through people that I love
Yet some folks think that they’re above
I cry and stomp and scream “But why
Can people watch as others die?”

My ribs are tight, my teeth do gnash
I rarely ever act so brash
Will you find it in your heart
Examine prejudice? Make a start?
Can you see humanity
And precious commonality?
Think of all that you could do
To comfort those with less than you!

  1. All I have to offer right now is long distance ((hugs)), love and prayers for easier times. None of this is right. It makes me want to stomp and shout “But it’s not fair!” A person’s right to live shouldn’t be measured by the almighty dollar.

Thank you, Cyn. Just so torn up tonight about compassion, and the lack of it, and the flippant way lives are being politicized. I decided to share this poem for some reason, not sure what it is. Maybe I just want this out there, some sort of stand for the little guy. Some sort of finger to The Man.

  2. Thank you for giving voice to our pain and anger. I am proud of you for giving yourself that permission. For taking off your “can’t we all get along” mask and getting it off your chest.

  3. Thank you for sharing this. All I can say is how absolutely horrendous this whole situation is. We live in one of the richest countries in the world that jumps in a millisecond to go bail out other countries and help other people and yet can’t seem to lift a finger to help our own. Makes my stomach flip.

Thank you for your support, Jen. I was so upset yesterday because I felt so ineffectual. Sometimes feels the odds are stacked heavily against us and it is hard to find ways to push back.
