Longing, Though I Hover

January 30, 2014 | 10 Comments

A mourning dove lands on a rooftop
My head turns
Fingers hover
Keyboard is quiet
Eyes and mouth are open
I watch as she hobbles about
Small head, and black scarf wrapped half-way ’round
The sky is gray, and holds the heavy promise of snow
Trees are newly bare as the last cloaks melted away
And today there is left a longing
For soft glitter to fall
To settle upon all standing
Blot out the brittle
Blanket the brown grass
Cling to the splintered fence
Coat the stripped-paint shed
And ease your way, sweet beauty
Into my heart
Which burns red hot
And aches for relief

Today’s Write Alm prompt is “longing,” and oh how it called to me- threatening to sweep me under, in a wave of pain and overthinking. I danced around the edge of it, favoring a day with no tears. I chose to turn to nature- a subject which lets me hover just above heartbreak.

Thank you, Jane! The rain is just turning over to snow here. The storms stalled on the Rockies and is just now sweeping down. I do hope you took photos! I love snow!

  1. Once again, you painted a picture that I see clearly through your eyes. Lovely! And I am glad that nature soothed your soul today.

Thank you! I really struggled with what to write today. I just didn’t feel like oozing pain. I sat to write, looked out the window, and there was the bird! Thanks, bird!
