My Hearts Fly

February 5, 2014 | 15 Comments

My sons took off for a week in Texas

My sons took off for a week in Texas

Quick hugs at a crowded gate
One more time
I take these tall boys into my arms
And hold them tightly

They embrace me with arms
Stronger and longer than mine
When did this happen?
Did I blink the years away?

I sit at the window and watch
The plane with a snowy backdrop
They taxi to a runway
Hidden from view

As I walk from the airport
I’m keenly aware
Of my hearts outside my body
Up in the darkening sky

A week will bring their return
These boys who are not so small
I’ll look up to find their eyes
When my hearts come back home

*Today’s Write Alm Promt is A Good Day. It was a good day, despite being difficult. I don’t like when my sons fly solo. But they always return. I’m resilient, as are they. I’m learning that good doesn’t mean perfect. Good today means courage and progress. Good today means not many tears. Good today means I’m settled, and glad to share that here. I hope you found the good in your day, too.

Thank you, Eryn! I hope they have a great time! It was -7 here in Denver when they took off, and I believe it was about 50 when they landed in Houston!
