On The Line

A twisted rope
Suspended between two pools
Obsidian shards
And limpid waves
The stakes seem impossibly high
A life driven by shame’s sting
Or the gentle draw
Of healthy striving

With each step my sole hovers
Breath catches
Eyes examine
Mind obsesses
Arms out for balance
Muscles rigid with perpetual fear
I gag on my own voice
Solid and stuck

“It shouldn’t be this hard!” onlookers say
Hearing so causes a shift toward
The darker side
Sharp edges
The cutting color of nothing
To fall in would be to become smaller
Bits and pieces of myself
Sliced for their pleasure

There are other words, thankfully
Which validate my pause
“Of course you feel this pressure, my love.”
The pitch draws me toward clarity
Falling into acceptance feels like
Floating and flying lucid
Enveloping compassion supporting
Limbs and life

So here am I poised
On the line
Every day treasured, yet
Each step measured
Upon an uncertain path
As I continue my journey
Wondering where to go
Seeking who I am
