There is an idea that gratitude is accessed via abundance. That when our lives are full to bursting, and all the skies blue, hearts leap from throats in joyful exclamation! I find the opposite to be true. The practice of gratitude is something I reach for most in times of trouble. Gratitude practice is like stumbling up my front steps, walking into a dark house, and searching along the wall for the light switch. I know night is all around, but I can change my perspective by turning on a lamp.
In practicing gratitude, I don’t pretend everything is ok. I just remind myself that I will be.
