I Am Committed To Recovery – A Self-Harm Awareness Day Post
Today, November 30th, is Self-Harm Awareness Day. Self-harm is a vulnerable, uncomfortable thing for me to talk about. I self-harm to try to cope with painful feelings of self-loathing and shame. I am fighting hard for recovery. This is a difficult battle.
You can help me and others by learning about self-harm. Stigma and myths keep people silent in their struggles, because we fear being misunderstood, harshly judged, or even hurt. This is devastating, because we just can’t get better on our own.
If you struggle with self-harm, educating yourself can be an empowering part of your healing process. You aren’t alone, and there is help available.
Here are some Self-Harm resources, for we who suffer, and for those who want to support us:
In Solidarity With Those Who Self-Harm by Shawna Ayoub Ainslie
Self-Injury Help, Support, and Treatment by Melinda Smith, M.A., and Jeanne Segal, Ph.D.
Self-Harm Recovery Affirmations by Eileen, on Tumblr
I am committed to self-harm recovery. I work hard every day to practice self-compassion and shame resilience. I want to learn to love myself as a feeling. Until then, my intention is to love myself as a verb, by practicing safe and tender treatment of my body.
Thanks for reading, and take care. <3
