To The Teenagers
Hey! I’m grateful to be in connection with you! You’re on the bumpy ramp into adulthood. You exist in rapidly changing brains, feelings, and senses of self. Some of you are in crisis, struggling against oppressive systems, facing challenges, experiencing broken hearts, and simply trying to survive.
I won’t tell you it gets better.
I will tell you I see your resilience and your coping skills.
I see your desire to feel better, and I believe in your ability to do so.
I want you to know it’s not just you.
Life is really hard.
25 years ago I was where you are now- feeling less-than, feeling depressed, feeling confused, feeling afraid, feeling damaged, feeling isolated, and feeling stuck. It was hard to see the point of living, but I wanted to survive. I wanted to belong somewhere, with someone. I really just wanted to feel ok!
Teenagers, you are not alone. I am right here with you, feeling difficult emotions every day, and working to survive.
Hey! You are worthy of taking up space. Your life matters. Your survival is important to me, and to the people who love you, even when that’s hard to believe (and I KNOW it’s hard to believe we are loved sometimes)!
When you feel hopeless, like you can’t go on, please reach out. I really want you to reach out. I believe in you.
